Why Pappucharu/Dal?

Comfort food. Quick & easy to prepare. Make it vegan using oil. No tomato recipe.  Indian lentil stew. Use Instant Pot or Indian pressure cooker.


Step 1

Pressure cook dal with  cumin, green chilies, onion, curry leaves and  little bit of oil.

Step 2

In Instant Pot, manual setting for 4 minutes, 6 minutes for pot in pot method. In  Indian pressure cooker, cook for 4 whistles.

Step 3

Release pressure naturally, transfer dal to a saucepan and mash it with the back of a spoon. Add salt, water and boil pappu khut for about 5 minutes.

Step 4

Meantime, prepare tadka using oil and/or ghee.  Temper it with mustard, cumin, curry leaves, garlic and turmeric powder.

Step 5

Pour the tadka over boiling pappu charu, cover and let boil for few minutes or a little longer if dal is too watery.

Step 6

Once desired consistency is reached, sprinkle chopped cilantro, turn off the flame and squeeze lime juice.

Serve nimmakaya pappu charu with rice and a dry curry on the side.
